The Beneficial Bakery Book Club
Pull up a chair, bakery familia! Every other month we gather inside the bakery on a Thursday evening from 6:30 to 8 pm to talk books, sip beverages, eat some treats, and spend an evening with fellow readers. We keep it small on purpose: just 7 readers plus our three moderators, so everyone has room to share.
Registration is required. Choose the meeting you'd like to join below (or all of them!) and reserve your seat. We announce our books in advance, so you'll have plenty of time to read along.
Thursday, November 5 · Gods of Jade and Shadow by Silvia Moreno-Garcia
In 1920s Mexico, Casiopea Tun spends her days cleaning her cruel grandfather's house and dreaming of a bigger life. Then she opens a mysterious wooden chest and frees Hun-Kamé, the Maya god of death, and is pulled into a journey across the country to help him win back his throne. It's a lush, fairy-tale-like adventure rooted in Maya mythology.
Thursday, January 7 · Etna by Paul Yoon
After years of serving in a devastating war, a military dog named Etna slips away and sets out across a broken country to find the seaside farm where he was born. Along the way he meets people and animals trying to rebuild their lives. This is a short, quietly beautiful novel about loss, trust, and what it means to find your way home. Have tissues ready.
Thursday, March 25 · Emily Wilde's Encyclopaedia of Faeries by Heather Fawcett
In 1909, Emily Wilde, a brilliant and prickly Cambridge professor, travels to a remote northern village to study its elusive faeries for the encyclopedia she's writing. Her plans get more complicated when her charming and maddening academic rival shows up uninvited. It's cozy, witty, and a little bit romantic.
